KATRINA QUILTS - Sue Van Vorhees, January 2006
My husband and I went to Ocean Springs, Mississippi (about 10 miles east of Biloxi) to help Katrina victims five months after the hurricane hit.
Doreen had extensive damage to her first floor of her home and she is still living in a trailer in the driveway. Her husband died one month before the storm and now she is alone. We surprised her with a quilt and she was delighted. She told us that it is cold in the trailer and very dismal. This will help her spirits. She couldn't thank us enough.
Alice, the tiny woman holding the quilt, lives with her mother and 11 year-old nephew in a marginal neighborhood of Biloxi. You can still see the blue tarp on the wall of her small ranch home. We gave Alice a FCQ love quilt and she nearly cried when she saw it. "I had two quilts before the storm," she said, "but now they're gone." When she saw the rabbits on the fabric she said , "Look! Bunnies! We had bunnies in our yard, but we haven't seen them since the storm." Many hugs of happiness followed all around.
